Beyond Surface

DSC05135

Beyond Surface is a wall painting commissioned by Havelock Walk as a temporary installation during the May 2010 Havelock Walk Open Studios. The piece is 10 ft high by 8ft wide and is made up of three separate panels made of MDF board, which divide the piece into three sections: top, middle and bottom. These three sections could also be described in terms of perspective, with the top panel inherently furthest from the viewer, and the bottom panel nearest. The bottom two panels (those nearest to the viewer) are painted blue whilst the top panel is painted orange. As the eye perceives the orange panel to be nearer than the blue panels in colour terms, the painting uses colour to challenge the laws of perspective. Beyond Surface explores the tension between the space of perspective and the illusory space created by colour.
